Roland Emmerich's latest end-of-the-world disaster flick dominated this past weekend with a $65.2 million gross. This marks Emmerich's second highest opening weekend, behind 2004's The Day After Tomorrow ($68.7 million). Opening in 882 theaters, Pirate Radio registered a tepid $2.9 million at #11. And Precious, expanding into 174 theaters, came in at #3 this weekend with $5.9 million (making for a very impressive $33,000 per-theater average). A Christmas Carol stayed fairly strong in its second weekend, dropping only 26% for a $22.3 million second weekend. Everything else in the top ten felt steeply, with the exception of Couple's Retreat - which somehow has managed to cross the $100 million mark. Opening in just 4 theaters, Fantastic Mr. Fox grossed $265,900 this past weekend, with a per-theater average of $66.475!

Mania.com is reporting from reliable sources that Sam Raimi has begun casting Spider-Man 4, and that Rachel McAdams has met with the film's producers for a major role. Apparently, McAdams is a frontrunner for Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat!It now appears that Spider-Man 4 will be at least a two-villain film, considering there are also rumblings of casting for a male villain. It was previously rumored that The Lizard would be the villain for the fourth film. But considering Dylan Baker has been in the cast as Dr. Curt Connors (who eventually becomes The Lizard) since Spider-Man 2, it is more likely that there will be another primary male villain other than The Lizard.
Spider-Man 4 begins filming next year for a May 5th, 2011 release.

Even with four new movies in wide release, it was Precious, a film that opened in just 18 theaters, that managed to have the most impressive weekend. Although the film did not break the top ten, it pulled a very impressive $1.9 million for a per theater average of over $104,000. That average stands as the 12th highest on record. As the film expands in the coming weeks, it'll be interesting to see how much of this strong momentum will be retained. Disney's A Christmas Carol opened in the #1 spot this weekend, although it wasn't quite the opening many had expected. The $200 million film opened with just $30.1 million, although it may have enough legs over the holiday season to pull a profit. The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Fourth Kind came it at #3 and #4 with $12.7 million and $12.3 million, respectively. At a disappointing #6 was Richard Kelly's new film The Box. The film received very mixed reviews and made only $7.6 million this past weekend.
