Funny People debuted this weekend at #1, but it wasn't exactly an impressive start. The $22.7 opening was the lowest #1 of 2009, and Adam Sandler's worst opening in five years. In terms of openings for Apatow-directed films, Funny People was barely ahead of The 40-Year-Old Virgin's $21.4 million opening in 2005, and far behind Knocked Up's $30.7 million opening in 2007. Funny People most likely underperformed because of it's long running time (146 minutes) and mixed word-of-mouth. The $70 million film may have trouble breaking even, which is very bad news for Universal. The studio has had a dismal summer between Land of the Lost flopping, Public Enemies doing just decent, Bruno grossly underperforming, and now Funny People disappointing. Inglourious Basterds will be the last big chance for them to salvage 2009's summer season.
