The Wolfman Pushed to February 2010

Universal's The Wolf Man was set to release November 6, but now has been pushed back for a February 12, 2010 release. The film was moved from April to November 2009 back in December 2008 so that Universal could have more time to market the film. But the reasonings for this new change are a little fuzzy. Some reports are suggesting that the move was made so that The Wolf Man wouldn't have to compete with The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The only issue with this is that New Moon was set to release a full two weeks after the The Wolf Man, which (with its R rating) would be targeting an older audience anyway.

February has basically become a dumping ground for disappointing studio films. Even so, that February weekend this year saw box office tallies of $215 million, much higher than the $136 million films earned during the first weekend of November in 2008. The studio could also very well see that weekend as being more profitable with its back-to-back holidays: February 14 is Valentines Day and February 15 is President's Day.

The Wolf Man, which was directed by Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III) and stars Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins, underwent re-shoots earlier this year in order to make the creature four-legged and fiercer. Whatever the reasons for the move, all we can do is hope that the film isn't as much of a mess as it's looking to be.

The comic-con footage from last year looked pretty good. Universal seems to be struggling a bit lately. Bruno disappointed at the box office, Public Enemies only did alright, and Funny People probably won't be huge with all of its dramatic content and 2.5 hour running time.

Well I think Universal was at a lost this summer. They did not really have a big time summer release such as star trek, wolverine or transformers. They attempted to lure people away from such film this summer, I saw public enemies and it was decent, not the best Mann film I've seen but ok. New Moon is not going to attract the same crowd as this film will. Hopefully it won;t be pushed to oblivion.

I think New Moon is going to mainly attract teenage girls. The Wolf Man would definitely grab more of an adult crowd. And two weeks is a lot of time to establish a box office presence.

Valkyrie had similar sorts of schedule shifts, and ended up being sort of decent. But usually these types of moves aren't a good sign.

I also forgot to mention Universal also had the bomb that was Land of the Lost.
