Despite generally negative reviews, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has raked in over $200 million since its release last Wednesday. This includes a $109 million weekend that set a box office record for an opening in June. The 5-day total is the second largest, behind The Dark Knight's $203.8 million last year. 2007's Transformers opened to $70.5 million and finished off at $319.2 million. Unless Revenge of the Fallen gets some bad word of mouth, it is very likely to pass the $400 million mark domestically. The other new release this past weekend was My Sister's Keeper, serving mainly as counter-programming to Transformers. It had a decent start with $12.4 million. Despite the massive success of Transformers this weekend, The Proposal, The Hangover, and Up also performed well. And even in its eighth week, Star Trek is still hanging in the top ten.
Away We Go expanded to about 500 theaters this weekend for a gross of over $1.7 million. The highest per theater average this weekend went to The Hurt Locker. Although only on 4 screens, it pulled in over $145,000 for a $36,338 PTA. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, for comparison, had a $25,736 PTA this weekend.
